Energy Zones

I direct my energy.

WHAT IT IS: We can’t talk about a framework inspired by yogic philosophy without mentioning chakras. Chakra means “wheel” in Sanskrit, which conjures up a mental picture of our energy spinning through physical and metaphysical centers.

The chakra system inspired the energy zones in the same way koshas inspired the Five Dimensions. I honor the roots while acknowledging where the branches split. To further your knowledge of chakras as traditionally taught, I encourage you to study yoga and Ayurveda.

My perspective around the energy zones layers on insights from the first law of thermodynamics. Remember the scientific law I mentioned at the beginning of the chapter? This is another name for the same concept. Energy is never lost—it’s only redirected. The energy zones help us understand the flow of energy in our own lives.

If our energy is consciously or subconsciously caught up in one zone, we inherently have less energy to direct elsewhere. So other energy zones, or even entire dimensions of well-being, get less of our attention and care.

I call them energy zones for a reason. Terms like zones or dimensions give us new words to use as we relate to ourselves, but they can also be limiting. If we’re not careful, we can view ourselves as a set of several disconnected parts. Thus, the term zones in energy zones. Much like time zones or geographical borders, energy zones allow us to conceptualize distinctions while still acknowledging that we’re part of a connected whole.

There are seven energy zones, each relating to a fundamental human desire. Unmet desires drain us of energy. Sometimes the leak is so subtle that we don’t even realize that our energy is being depleted.

Have you ever gotten a “Can we talk later?” text message and worried about it for hours only to find out that your boss wanted to know whether you preferred chocolate or vanilla cake for your birthday celebration, or your friend wanted your opinion on what section to buy concert tickets in? Suddenly, you realize you haven’t taken a full breath since you received the text and this is the first time you’ve been totally present all day. You desired a good relationship with your boss or your friend, and the text message suggested that the relationship may be in question, leading you to subconsciously direct your energy toward that unmet desire.

That’s the effect of an unmet desire that’s resolved over the course of a day. Imagine the impact of months, years, or a lifetime of unfulfilled desires. Your wants and needs aren’t just valid, they’re necessary. When you honor them, you shift your energy in a way that ripples out to your surrounding ecosystems.

As you review the seven energy zones, take a moment to ask yourself their corresponding questions.
